EMPOWERED Leadership

Impacting and Influencing others

Applying the EMPOWERMENT formula

EMPOWERMENT = mission x connection x simple & specific x smother (E=mcs2)

Mission

Before impacting and influencing others, first, you must start with yourself. Once your Personal Mission, Core Values, and driving force behind accomplishing your mission is solidified, the mission of the product, service or group must be defined.

The Leader's Personal Mission

  • The What: What, beyond yourself, do you want to accomplish?
  • The How: What 3-5 core values or guiding principles will you, as a leader, adhere to?
  • The Why: Why is this mission so important to accomplish?

What is the mission of the product, service, concept or group?

Connection

The deeper the relationship, the stronger the potential for leadership. The greater the connection to how daily activities contribute to the group mission, the greater your impact.

  • What drives each person you work with, both professionally and personally?
  • What is their personality disposition? (e.g. DiSC and/or StrengthsFinder)
  • Are individual driving motivators connected to impacting and influencing that individual?
  • Who are the Informal Leaders within your group? How can you connect and align with this person/people for positive change?
  • How do your strengths contribute to the mission and how can you "staff" your weaknesses through others?
  • How does Personal Mission align with the product, service, concept, or group mission?

Simple & Specific

  • Is your personal mission and associated values simple & specific?
  • Are coaching principles, directed discussion and expectations simple & specific?
  • Is the connection between what drives the individual and the team mission made in a simple & specific way?

Smother

  • How frequently will you connect with each person you need to influence?
  • How frequently will you connect and align with those outside of those you need to directly influence to improve impact?
  • What does follow-up communication look like to reinforce team mission, goals, individual goals, group connection, or development?
  • Does each fundamental principle have consistent reinforcement to result in long-term success?
  • Take time to observe, ask and reflect on whats working, what's not, and why?
